We are the Bear Clan of Maxan Lake B.C. Canada. The Bear Clan originate from North/Central British Columbia. We are at the headwaters of the main rivers of this province, which are the Fraser, Skeena and Bulkley Rivers. Our sacred lands are called the 'Lands of a thousand lakes'. We claim Indigenous sovereignty, as we do not accept any sort of funding from any source. We are a self-supporting indigenous familys, as our ancestors before us were. We support ourselves by selling wood carvings, bead work, art prints, indigenous medicines, and we also take in visitors from around the world. We teach the new comers to our sacred lands about our life styles and our way of life. We also have adopted so many people, from around the world, into our Bear Clan familys.
As Indigenous people of this only unceded province of Canada, we stand to protect our sacred lands and sacred waters. In the past we have not had a voice, for the world to hear, until we got involved with the computer era. The computer is an amazing tool. With this I am so thankful, that the computer cannot discriminate, against us.
In the past, we were evicted off our sacred lands by the illegal treaty chiefs, who are using th justice system, to legally steal our sacred lands. To make way for their illegal treaty process. Once the treaty process has been over and done with, we as the real indigenous people, are left homeless, landless, and no place to go. The sacred lands between Prince George and Prince Rupert B.C. is now dubbed "the highway of tears", as there has been so many missing/murdered indigenous women. The missing/murdered indigenous women era, began when the "land claims" process era began, over ten years ago.
As the spokesperson for the Bear Clan of Maxan Lake, I have been evicted off my sacred lands, three times over the past ten years. We now live in the lower mainland where we work out of our home. We still stand up to protect our sacred lands of Maxan Lake and traplines. This lake was named after my grandfathers Maxan Tom and Michell Tom. To date, the present chief and band council have illegally 'amalgamated' our Maxan Lake Band with their band. This was done without our consent. We are having a hard time, trying to get Maxan Lake Band back into our familys hands. It has also been hard for us to get a decent lawyer. As we cannot get any kind of help from the local region of B.C., I hope this website will assist us in getting the help and assistance we very badly need, in order for the Bear Clan familys to survive.
I have added the www.hiddenfromhistory.org/frank-helen/index.html website, only because it has some of our past information on it, for people to read. I had to take this site away from the so called (Rev) Kevin Daniel Annett, because he was not helping us out with any funding, and we could not have any access to this site, as Kevin was using us for his own purpose. AS he has used many other indigenous peoples storys, regarding the residential school survivors abuses, for his own purpose. I have noticed that he has also swisted around many of our stories, to make them sound as if they are his own stories. Again, he does not represent us, anymore, as we have moved away from his lies and deceit. He had also kicked us out of HIS radio program at the Co-op Radio station in Vancouver BC. Kevin has' hidden his own history' from us, as indigenous people of this only unceded province of Canada. He has written two books, in the past, and has used OUR papers, to his own advantage. We found out that he has no accountability with regards to moneys, that was one of the reasons why he was kicked out of the priesthood. Yet he still uses the priests white coller, when ever he wants to get his own way. He is a sheep, wearing wolfs clothing. Since we were kicked out of the Co-op radio station, a few months ago, we have had no other access to any radio programs. The radio program was our only way of getting our stories out to the public. Now we are again 'silenced' and we have no voice. The computer is our only way of getting our stories out, to the international level.
We have asked him to stop using our stories and our names, but this has not ceased. It seems that he has the upper hand in the Co-op Radio station, as he still runs the "hidden from history" radio program.
Another problem we are having, is regarding the VanCity Credit Union, where we have a bank account. It seems that we have had many people who have been trying to make donations to our account, but the bank will not accept these donations. As the bank considers the donated moneys as "drug moneys". This same bank, at one time, promised us a mortgage for buying a house. Once we found the house, we tried to get the bank to mortgage the house for us, but we ended up with another problem. The bank denied us the promised mortgage. So we lost the chance to buy the house. It seems that we are discriminated against, everywhere we turn. We cannot even get a loan from this bank, as our art work is not considered as income. We will try and find another bank to deal with but discrimination is a huge factor, and I doubt if we will find another bank at all. So we are stuck with the abuse of Vancity Credit Union, for the time being.

Update to the Bear Clan of Maxan Lake of British Columbia, Canada, website: So much has happened to us since the last time I edited this website. During the month of December 2004, we have been spending much of our time in the justice system of the supreme court of British Columbia. We have been supporting the court case of John Graham, who is being extradited to the United States for the murder of Anna May Pictou-Aquash. For supporting John Graham we have run into so many obstacles and abuses from the public at large. We have been attacked and assaulted by Kelly White, who is the main person who had put the finger on John Graham. As she told the Vancouver city police that John Graham had sexually assaulted her, which is a false statement. The sexual assault charge was the beginning of Johns case, than it ended up with the murder of Anna May Aquash. John's court case goes back into court on December 7, 2005.
Than I was assaulted by another friend of Kelly's, a woman by the name of Vivian Sandy. After this assault came the endless scenes of intimidations, from both women. I could not go to the Vancouver Indian Center, without these two women attacking me. As I am an indigenous woman in a wheelchair, I could not protect myself. I always had to have someone beside me, to protect me, to make sure I would not get attacked again.
My husband and I, are both disabled indigenous people, we both have head injurys, and any sort of attack on us, would devastate our well being. Plus we are too old to fight, as we are both in our fiftys.
Besides these assaults, we were both attacked by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. We were pulled over on the freeway, on our way home from johns court oneday. The police officer said he pulled us over for "driving too slow" on the freeway. We were following another vehicle, who was driving just as slow. Yet we were the ones to be stopped.
During this pull over, both of us were beaten up by the arresting officers. My husband was charged for "obstructing a police officer", when in fact is was the police officer that severly beat up my husband. For going to John's court case and for my husband getting beaten up by the police officer, my husband has been going to court now for a few months. My husband goes to court for an appearance in September 2005, and for trial in October 21, 2005. Besides being charged, our van was confiscated by the arresting officer. Our van stayed in the impound for over a month, and this cost us dearly. I was left on the side of the freeway, sitting in my wheelchair, plus I was also beaten up by one of the officers. I was hauled off my wheelchair by the officer and thrown onto the pavement, and the officer slammed me down and had his knee dug unto my back. When all I wanted was to go somewhere and use the washroom.
The Abbotsford court house is much different than the Vancouver court house. You could cut the air with a knife, in the abbotsford court house. The discriminatin and racism, is so rampant. I could see and feel the hatred toward us, from the judge, sheriffs and the policemen. It is so scary.
Years ago, when we were charged and going to court in the Vancouver court house, the air was, just as bad. We got to be well know in the Vancouver court house, over the years, so our presents, became an everyday thing. Slowly, the discrimination and racism, subsided. Now the sheriffs, say hi and wave at us and ask us how we are doing, in the vancouver court house. It took so many years to get "some sort of respect" in the vancouver court house. But its a different story in the Abbotsford court house. I am sure if we were still in the dark ages, we would be hung by the neck until dead, even though we are not guilty. Even today, even just by their looks, we could be dead. I hope to see some changes, within the abbotsford court house. I think we need to hang the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" right smack in the front door of all the court houses of this unceded province, now called British Columbia, Canada.
We are looking for more support in our court cases, both John Grahams and Frank Martins. We need more "human rights defenders" in our indigenous sovereign world. Without human rights defenders we would be "railroaded" through the justice system. Racism and discrimination needs to be a thing of the past. We are seeking equality and justice for our brothers and sisters. Email me for more information at telquaahelen@yahoo.ca and at telquaa@hotmail.com.
Today is November 7, 2005. A lot has happened to us since I last edited this website. Frank Martin went to court a few times since the summer time. Its been a year since we were pulled over on the freeway near Abbotsford, on October 22, 2004. Frank went to trial on October 21, 2005. Up to this date our life was a living hell. Three days before the court date, we were once again pulled over on the highway, close to our home, by another police officer by the name of Corporal Robinon. He also decided to steal our van (confiscated), so we would not make it to court on on Friday. It was not a very good experience at all. We had to wait on the highway for over an hour, before a taxi came along to hopefully take us home. As this police officer had called a taxi from Chilliwack, instead of from Agazzis B.C. When this taxi came along it was a small car, and so my electric scooter woud not fit in it. So, we sent our daughter home in the taxi and what ever stuff we could take out of the van. Than Frank walked home with me in my electric scooter. It was a cold day, and I was freezing by the time I got home. It took us a couple of hours before we made it home. The police officer told us our van was confiscated for twenty four hours. When I phoned to towing company the next day, if we could pick up our van, they said that the van was confiscated for thirty days. This left us without a vehicle, and court a few days away. We were devastated. We had to get a friend from Vancouver to take us to court, three days later.
On October 21, 2005, the court case lasted all day long. By the end of the day, we were the only once left in the court house, along with the judge, sheriff, police officer, and our lawyer. Two police officers took the stand. One I did not know, the other was the police officer that pulled us over and beat Frank up, while arresting him. This police officer was a Constable Sokolowski, when this case began. When trial started this same officer is now Corporal Sokolowski. This made me wonder if that was why our present van was confiscated by a Corporal Robinon. I
I was a witness for Frank, so I could not hear what these officers were saying in the court room. I could only watch them, through the window. When it was my turn to be on the witness stand, I could not hold my self. I had to tell the judge about the many beatings that Frank and I had sustained over the past years, from Police brutality. The many scars we both carried with us, reminding us of how the police have treated us, over the years. Plus on the night of Franks arrest, he was so badly beaten up by the arresting officer, Constable Sokolowski. This officer had used the 'strangle hold' on Frank, and this knocked Frank out. He pulled away from us on the freeway so fast that night, and I could not see Frank in his car at all. I was sure he had killed Frank. Frank told me later on, that the police had to call in the Chilliwack ambulance, into the chilliwack police station, to help the police to revive Frank, that night. After they revived Frank, the police decided to take him into Vancouver B.C., where they released him.
I phoned the Chilliwack police station the night of the arrest, to make sure Frank was okey. There was no answer. I phoned this jail again the next morning, and a woman answered. She said to me that there was no one by that name, and that there was no one in the jail all that night. Things were getting scary for me, by the minute. I phoned around to the hospitals and to the other jails to see if Frank was anywhere else. I could not find him at all. Apparently, they drove him to Vancouver and dumped him off in the alley behind the Vancouver police station. This is not the first time that this has happened to Frank.
By the time I got off the witness stand, the judge was not happy about the whole case. The judge said that I had made some 'serious allegations' and that this case will not stop here. He wanted to put the other police officers on the stand also. So another court date was set for December 2, 2005. This date was set to set another trial date, to continue this case. The next trial date is set for Valentines Day, February 14, 2006. On this date, there should be four or five other police officers to take the witness stand.
In the mean time, we have no vehicle to get around. I am stuck in my own prison once again, as I am used to taking my electric scooter into the van, so I can go shopping, to see the doctors, dentist, eye doctor and my cultural activities at the Vancouver Indian Center.
By the time we could get the van back again, the tow bill and storage bill will be very high. As was the last van they confiscated. The price of the last van was over $1500.00, and the van was undrivable as a result of damages done to the van, before we got it back. That van is still parked in our yard, and it needs another motor. This latest van that was confiscated, will cost us over $500.00 before we can get it out of the tow company. As we are both on disability pension, we cannot afford this high price. We may have to abandon this van, even though we need it badly. We cannot get this van out of the towing company until November 18, 2005.
Through out our life time together, this latest van, is about the eleventh van to be confiscated from us, by the police of this province. There seems to be no end is sight.
